Abstract The Friendly Union Society was formed in Charleston in 1813. It consisted of a membership of no more than fifty men and no less than five. It was formed for the relief of orphans and widows in the community; and to provide for the general welfare of the community as a whole. Abstract A Charleston (S.C.) orphanage for African American children, founded in 1891 by Reverend Daniel Joseph Jenkins. The Orphan Aid Society (chartered 1892) was the governing board of the orphanage.
